Last year was record-breaker for global car sales. According to reports, 88.1 million cars and light commercial vehicles were sold worldwide in 2016, up 4.8% from 2015.

Car buyers across the world had hundreds of models to choose from in 2016. Each market had a large number of cars of all kinds and types. Although many models were successful, only one car can claim the number one best-selling car title in each country.  

Here is a list of 2016 best-selling car in USA, Germany, France, UK, Italy, India, China, and Japan:

The F-Series lineup, which includes the F-150, has been a very popular vehicle in America for a long time now. With 820,000 units sold in 2016, the Ford F-Series pickup became the best-selling truck in America for 40 years straight.


Germany: Volkswagen Golf (Picture Source: Volkswagen)


The Volkswagen Golf has been the best-selling car in Germany since 1981. The 2016 Volkswagen Golf remained on top of the charts as the best-selling car in the country with 235,935 units sold that year. 


France: Renault Clio (Picture Source: Renault)


The Renault Clio has been France’s favorite car for years. The Renault Clio IV was able to retain its title of being the favorite car of the French in 2016. Renault, the best-selling brand in the country, sold 112,152 units of the Clio IV in 2016. 


UK: Ford Fiesta (Picture Source: Ford)


2016 was the eighth consecutive year where Fiesta was the UK's favorite model. The 2016 Ford Fiesta was the best-selling vehicle in the UK with a wide gap over the others, selling over 120,000 unit. 


Italy: Fiat Panda (Picture Source: Fiat)


For the fifth time in a row, the Fiat Panda remained Italy's most favorite car. It was able to retain its crown as the most popular car in Italy in 2016, with more than 126,300 units sold that year. 


India: Maruti Suzuki Alto (Picture source: Suzuki)


The Indian new car market expanded by 7% in 2016 to 2,966,600 cars, with the top-selling car being the Maruti Suzuki Alto. The Alto kept its lead in the India market throughout the year, selling around 227,700 units between January and November.


China: Wuling Hongguang (Picture Source: GM)


In the dynamic environment of the Chinese car market, the SAIC-GM-Wuling Hongguang is still China's most favorite vehicle. The Hongguang was able to stay the best-selling vehicle for a fifth consecutive year with 650,018 units sold in 2016. 


 Japan: Toyota Prius (Picture Source: Toyota)


In 2016, Toyota dominated the Japanese market, with the top three best-selling cars being Toyota Prius, Toyota Aqua, and Toyota Sienta. The 2016 Prius regained its position as Japan’s favorite car model with 248,258 units sold.
